My late mother once told me of the excitement when it was announced that Guy Mitchell was to appear at the Globe. It was the days of limited tv and a devotion to Radio Luxembourg, and Mitchell’s much anticipated appearance on stage was greeted first with general acclamation, then quickly followed by much audible comment about how small he was.

I was at the Fiesta Night Club when Guy Mitchell was appearing there. It was at the end of his career and nearly the end of the Fiesta. Guy Mitchell had no ‘backing group’ and Keith Lipthorpe and the residential band stepped in. For Guy Mitchell, who had so many No 1’s, it was his biggest flop ever. They were never in sequence with each other and he was booed at the end. What a shame for such a good singer and entertainer. I believe he was staying at the Station Hotel in Billingham while he was here.
