This isn”t in Stockton at all. It is in West Hartlepool. The location is in the town centre at the junctions of Clarence Road, Raby Road, Stockton Street and Victoria Road. The tram at the left hand side is emerging from Church Sqaure and behind it is the Public Library which still stands, although it is no longer the town”s Central Library. Just above the trees to the right can be seen one of the Italianate clock towers of the large store that is today Wilkinson”s, was Binns, but at the time of the Photograph was Gray Peverall”s. Further into the photo other trams stand in Stockton Street. This photo has been published several times in Hartlepool and some think that it was posed to show off the electric tramways of the time.
This is almost certainly a picture taken in (West)Hartlepool with the town hall on the left and the clock tower on the right is above the shop of Gray, Peverell and Co. Ltd. This shop became Binns, I think! The road is now the A169 looking south.
