Steve Young did play for Stockton Buffs & was a good youngster, he was in the Buffs five a side squad that won the Evening Gazette/Cleveland Council Competition at Stockton Tilery Sports Centre when they beat a team called the Banners in the final who were managed by the Boro goalkeeper Jim Platt. Others in the Buffs squad were Barry Noble (Hartlepool Utd.), Ray Moore (Billingham Synthonia), Len Nicholson (Head Wrightson), Terry (Big T) Turnbull (Hartlepool Utd. & Crook Town), Steve Bromfield (Billingham Synthonia) & George Spedding(Head Wrightson). Steve Young also played in a good St Bedes Juniors side in 1971/72 season which can be seen on this site.
My dad keeps saying he played football and I never know if he is joking or not. I have seen this photo of him in the buffs football team, Steve young. Does anyone else know anything about him, and did he play football as well as he keeps telling me?
This team was started in the late sixties by Robert(Bob)Dixon, Matty Marley, Charlie Bainbridge & Kenny Jones, they were well represented on the club committee by Billy Cook.
Tony Mann is the father of Fred who was a good footballer and played for Stockton Town when they played out of the Buffs Club. Barry Roberts is the brother of a well known local goalscorer Tony(Tiger)Roberts, Ronnie Leeming is one of the Norton footballing brothers.
This photo was taken before a pre-season friendly against Norton C.C.T. at Station Road, the rugby changing hut is in the background. The team is back-row L to R Dave Dyson, Brian Smith, Tony Mann, Gordon Grant, Ray Retallick, ? Gill, Eddie Brainey, Barry Roberts. Front-row L to R Len Nicholson, Steve Young, Ronnie Leeming, Dave Randall, Pat Harvey, Ged Leake, Craig Nicholson(mascot).
