I’ve said it before but have to stick up for Miss Betts! I adored her, she even wrote to me and my family when we went to Oz 1969. She was a great teacher as well, ” a straight line is the shortest distance between 2 points” Still recall all her definitions as she called them.
Miss Betts was still there when I was there in 1968. We were all scared of her too! We also had to wear our berets and skirts had to touch the floor when kneeling down. Field hockey and tennis still in Ropner Park. I emigrated to Canada in June of 1968 but lots of memories.
June Guy – you haven’t changed a bit!!
This was year of entry, 1955, at Richard Hind Secondary school. I am 2nd row 3rd from left. June Guy(nee Peacock) anyone out there remember? eadmistress Miss Gwen Carr(always wore here graduation gown), Miss Mabbatt for geography, Miss Betts for Maths (I was scared of her), Miss Cannon for Art (my favourite), Mrs Wozniak for french and Miss Rowbotham who always rode her bike to school. We had to wear full uniform at all times, even berets, and were in big trouble if ever seen eating in the street in uniform, and skirts had to be a certain length below the knee – How times have changed – unfortunately! We had to walk each day down to Oxbridge to the Huts for School dinners and had our tennis lessons and sports days in Ropner Park.

Evelyn Prest (now Evelyn Abraham) and myself -Marjorie Foster (now Marjorie Holland) were with you at Sedgefield Junior School, and then at Richard Hind. Evelyn went on to become a midwife and I went into teaching. I left England in 1974 and have lived in Canada for the last 39 years. I retired 5 years ago after many years teaching maths and French to students and teachers. I now live in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.
I have two sons and two grandchildren.
Evelyn lives in North Yorkshire and also has two sons and two grandchildren. we last got together in Canada four years ago.
I hated that school uniform almost as much as the warm milk!
