I recall seeing this man in the market place in my early childhood (late 60’s/early 70’s) and he looked very old then. One of life’s strange things that you remember.
He was there in the 1940’s, 1950’s. I left Stockton in 1957 and ‘the man with the scales’ as he was known at home seemed to have been there forever, as were a lot of the stall holders who respected him and made sure his space was available.
Hey Martin, I wasn’t too far out with his name. I also remember getting weighed by him as a child in the 60’s. I believe Jack lived in the large house near to Durham Road roundabout with its junction to Bishopton Avenue, near to Westfied Crescent. Sorry Robert, no pics of Nelson Terrace or surrounding areas, there may be some on the site somewhere.
The gentleman with his scales is called Jack Roberts and has a young boy, I would have been weighed on his scales, him issuing me a paper chit with the weight written in pencil.

I can’t seem to find any pictures of Milbank Street anywhere.

I remember standing and watching him weighing people when I was a kid. Weighed me a couple of times.

Do you have any photos of the streets off Nelson Terrace, Peter?
Not sure but I think his name was John Robson.
