  1. I attended Billingham South Modern about 1945 to 1955 are their any photos that I may be on, or any class members that remember me? Thanks for any comments.

  2. Fred Thomas must have been having a day off. I’m sure that he was in this class. I have a similar picture, probably taken on the same day showing class A

      • hi Kim. No, I havent posted the class A photo. Will have a look for it. Its not lost – I just dont know where it is!! There was no Maureen Cartwright in the Class A which I was in, but there was a Norma Cartwright and she is definitely on the picture that I have. Perhaps Maureen was her older sister. I remember that Norma was quite a fun type and liked to sing “Springtime in the Rockies”.

    • Hi Doug: I was in 4A 1953/1954 and would very much like to see your picture of the same any chance that you could post/email it in to Picture Stockton? My family left for Canada in November 1954 and I currently live in Victoria British Columbia. I had an on-line chat with Bill Charlton several years ago about various teachers that we both recalled at that time.

  3. Bob – I do remember both you and Esther and have fond memories of our visits to Ragworth Place and Oakwell Road. Where have all the years gone? Tony Benson – The Diane Harrison is the one who went through school with us. Last time I met her was in Middlesbrough General Hospital. I had broken my leg horse riding and Diane was a staff nurse there.

  4. Ethel, when you first arrived on this site I thought that I recognised the name Ethel Dodds. Then when Tony Benson mentioned Wolviston Green my mind started to think, then today you answered Tony’s question and a lot of great memories came to light. I remember your cottage on the Green with you and your brothers John, Peter and Billy. I did visit your house with my cousins Dorothy and Alan who were my cousins through a different family line. We would also go round the corner onto Darlington Lane where our uncle George Stainthorpe had the farm with aunt Alice. Across the road and opposite the farm living in the bungalow was auntie Polly. I can also remember you moving from Wolviston into a house in Cotswold Crescent which I also visited. Also remember your mam bringing you all to visit your g/mother Mrs Brown at 9 Ragworth Place, Norton. She would sit in the house with the parrot on her shoulder. She wore a felt hat that was bitten away around the brim by the parrot. I can also remember to this day the thick doorstep slice of bread spread with maggie and evaporated milk and sugar she would give us. Probably you don’t remember me but maybe more my sister Esther?

  5. Bill Charlton, wonder how I managed to miss putting my name to my question about Charlie, but thanks for the confirmation. Quite a shock to learn of his death. I remember it was in his car, a red Austin mini, that we were travelling to the course through the thickest fog in creation. As we motored along the trunk road, very slowly, we had climbed the ramparts of the railway bridge, before Grangetown, just after the summit the car emerged from a standing wall of fog into brilliant sunshine. Never seen anything like it before or since. I can only guess that an onshore breeze was pushing the fog towards the Boro.

  6. Yes Tony, my family lived on Wolviston Green. We moved to Billingham in 1947 after the death of our father. What a shock it was living in Billingham after village life. I still drive round the village quite often and have very fond memories of our time there. I have a couple of photos from the village school in 1947, I hope to submit to this site soon.

  7. Is this Ethel Dodds who lived on Wolviston Green? Is this Diane Harrison who lived in Billingham near the Swan hotel? Is this Barbara Stanworth whose brother was a flat race jockey? If so I knew them from their days in the Junior School – a very good one! Hope they are all well.

  8. Bill Charlton, was Charlie Dobinson employed at Wilton ICI do you know? If it’s the same lad we shared lifts for an eight week course on laboratory practice at Redcar technical college in the middle sixties. We ended up working on adjacent sites within the flameproof area. I was on polythene and Charlie on olefines IV.

  9. Ethel thanks for the information, just about to write in regarding Alistair Mcgregor, Charlie Dobinson died some years ago in his late sixties, and also believe Gerald Dunn died many years ago.

      • Hi Gerald Derek Randall here glad to hear you are still with us. I remember going on a trip to Seahouses in Northumberland and you were there. We must have both been in the Lifeboys. We were both in the last year of the South Modern school in Billingham. I went to Canada in 1954 and now live in Victoria BC.
