These photographs are courtesy of Catherine Wright whose Grandad, Ray Carter, can be seen on each image. Ray was employed at Haverton Hill shipyard from 1948 working his way up to Head Supervisor by 1969.
The black & white images were taken at Smiths Dock c1930-40. The colour image was taken at Swan Hunter, Haverton on the other side of the river c1970.

My Dad, John Hamilton is the man smiling in the second photo and, the man on the left is, I believe, Eddie Scanlon. My Dad worked there until he was made redundant in 1979 and became a school caretaker. I also remember him talking about a man called ‘Bunny’, and him taking his ‘mash’ each day of milk, sugar and tea (I think). He was a shipbuilder and often on an evening would sit wearing his cap low down over his eyes watching TV due to ‘flashes’ caused by ‘bloody welders’. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knew him (he died in 1999)
I knew RAY well and his mate in the photo FRED WILLIAMS (wearing glasses).
