Junior football was under 18 years old in those days, this team consists of six players in their eighteenth year – Brian Ligget, Ralph Harrison, Keith Dunn, Wacker Walker, Billy Bumford & Micky Clarke. Two were in their sixteenth year (just left school) – Keith Gillings & George Outhwaite & the rest had another season in junior football.
The late Billy Bumford in this photo was an old type centre-forward, good in the air & as hard as nails, centre-halves knew they had been in a game when they marked Billy. He was a great servant to Head Wrightson’s football team as well as the Queens Club along with Gilly Dumford, Dave(Dumper)McCarton, Lenny Chadfield, Jimmy(Kipper)Baldwin, Mario Dambrosi & Tommy Powell.
Has anybody got photos of Head Wrightsons senior teams in the sixties? Maybe Lee Nicholson could get some off his dad & send them to Picture Stockton?
Do you remember a lad called Swagger Swainston, first name Gareth I believe? He was in the Apprentice School at HW’s a couple of years after me. I think he played for Heads.
Brian Ligget was the older brother of Norman who played centre-forward for Middlesbrough.
Seven of this team worked at Head Wrightsons, Wacker Walker at the Forge, Ralph Harrison at Eaglescliffe, the rest at Teasdale Works except Billy Goodson, George Bell, Billy Bumford & Micky Clark.
Team is Head Wrightsons Juniors season 1957/58 & the trophy is the North Riding Minor Cup. Team as follows; back-row L-R Brian Ligget, Billy Goodson, George Bell, Keith Gillings, Ralph Harrison, Keith Dunn. Front row; Jock Earnshaw, Wacker Walker, Billy Bumford, Micky Clark, George Outhwaite, Geof Earnshaw, Jackie White.
