  1. Back in 1992 my daughter was attending Crooksbarn School when it was decided with the the help of Stockton Council, to landscape this area to make it into public open space. And with bags of help from the children of Crooksbarn School this aim was achieved. The area was previously occupied by Tinklers haulage and Moore and Cartwright’s builders amongst others over the years. I told my daughter it was known as Tinkler’s yard when I was young, but somehow the name was altered to Tinker’s yard. I still have the cutting from the Evening Gazette with my daughter in the picture of when the landscaping was taking place.

  2. My mother was born in No.14 Page Terrace, and I’ve sort of found out which house it was, but I wondered when the houses in Station Rd on the same side as Page Terrace were built (the ones up toward the church). I’ve looked on the 1901 census, and can’t make out if they just have names, and no numbers, a friend lives in No.97 station rd, and I can find that on the 1911 census, but not the 1901. Be grateful for any help.

  3. I wondered if anyone could tell me why the terrace was built was it to house workers at the nearby brick works. I had relatives at no 17 in abt 1915 and I think he worked as a bricklayer.
These people lived at no 17 so I guess this house was one of the ones added on to the existing twelve – does anyone have a photo of the terrace?

  4. These houses were built in 1874 by Mr Harry Fletcher who’s building yard was situated in what is now Tinkers Yard at the bottom of Station Road. Page Terrace was the first twelve houses that were built then, a few years later on, the remainder of the properties were ajoined on to existing twelve and this then became Station Road. You can see the join in the middle of the row.

  5. Thanks again Bob Irwin – this had crossed my mind. I will go back and take another look at these houses and do a count-down, starting with the house that has the name plate and calling it No.1 as my guess is the numbering would have started here.

  6. There was only one side to Page Terrace so I would imagine that the numbers would not be even one side and odd on the other but were consecutive.

  7. Thank you Bob Irwin. Just been along to take a look at these houses, to try and work out which one my great grandfather would have lived in, but was a bit disappointed to see that the numbers on these doors were in three figures – I had expected to see only two figures, which appears on his death certificate and other items which I have. Presumably the numbering system changed as Station Road was built?

  8. Several years ago when I first started building up my family tree, I remember my mother telling me that her grandfather had lived in Page Terrace. When I asked her where was Page Terrace, she said that it was somewhere near Station Road, Norton, but couldn’t quite remember where. Some years later, when I was walking along Station Road, I eventually spotted the name, Page Terrace, set into the brickwork, above the name plate of Station Road, and took this photograph of it. My great grandfather died in 1927 and on his death certificate it states his address as Page Terrace. Out of curiosity, I wonder what year this changed to Station Road?
