Merry Christmas from ICI 1964

These images are scans of a Christmas card which was sent to retired ICI staff in 1964. The picture shows the South Grid rail sidings at ICI. Against the factory background there are two freight trains, one steam hauled and one diesel hauled. An ICI diesel loco can also be seen. This painting once hung in the Conference Room of the Agricultural Division Process Offices at ICI. Courtesy of Norman Kidd.

  1. I wonder if my grandfather, Jos Sheraton, who retired in 1964 received one of these. See “Sheraton Retirement” via search on this site.

  2. The card is taken from a painting by Terence Cuneo who also painted many of the posters to be seen in railway carraiges and on station walls. He usually included a tiny mouse within the picture as his trademark. It should be visible on this card with the aid of a magnifying glass. As one who spent some of my childhood breathing in ICI fumes (when the wind was blowing in the wrong direction), this scene evokes a fishy aroma.

    • The mouse is just to the right of the ground signal in the foreground. No, my eyesight isn’t that good. I Googled ‘Cuneo ICI’! While not seeking to downplay Mr Cuneo’s prolific talent, I wonder how many people would bother to return me a card if I sent one like this at Christmas?
