  1. Barry Butler was captain of Norwich City & was regarded as one of the best defenders in the league by opponents & regarded as one of City’s greatest ever players. Barry joined Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager paying South Bank £300 for his services, Norwich paid Sheffield Wed a transfer fee of £5,000 in August 1957. He played a total of 349 games for the club including a consecutive run of 208 games which was only broken when he played for an F.A.XI Side. Norwich City thought that much of him they named their Player of the Year trophy after him.

  2. MY WIFE AND I VISITED BARRY AND THELMA IN NORWICH JUST A FEW MONTHS BEFORE BARRY WAS KILLED. BARRY WAS AWAY THAT DAY SO WE ONLY SAW THELMA. A LOVELY GIRL WHO I MET WHEN WE USED TO GO BIKING WITH THE CROWED FROM THORNABY, OXBRIDGE AND NORTON. PLEASE GIVE HER OUR REGARDS.

  3. I played football and Cricket with Barry Butler for Stockton Schoolboys teams, and also for Stockton cricket Club captained by Arthur Austin in the early fifties. So imagine my surprise when I was playing golf with a chap (an ex Para trooper by the name of Dave Sheridan) who just happened to mention he came from Norwich before emigrating to Australia. I asked Dave he if had ever seen Barry play for Norwhich and to my surprise told be he was a good friend of Barry and was with Barry only minutes before Barrys tragic car crash. It’s a small world out there and it never ceases to amaze me at coincidences that occur throughout ones life.

  4. Barry Butler lived at 13 Wren Street in Oxbridge and went to Oxbridge Lane and Richard Hind schools. The photo is Sheffield Wednesday prior to beating Burnley 2-0 in a top first division match on January 1st 1954. Back row L-R; Gannon, Kenny, Tyall, Barry Butler, Davies, Seemley. Front row; Finney, Quixall, Sewell, Shaw, Woodhead. Barrys sister Nina and her husband Michael now live in Eaglescliffe. Barrys wife, Thelma, allowed me to submit this photograph.
