This is a photo of the United Biscuits football team which won the old 2nd Division of the Stockton Sunday League in 1979-80.
Great memories of the UB Football team and all my team mates, Steve Stratton, Tommy Gilbert, Tommy Mustard, Norman Bellerby, Peter Bonner and great days playing with my brother Eddie to mention just a few, managed by the late Mick Hough who was a loyal work colleague. Another player I’d like to mention even though he didn’t play for UB is Lenny Nicholson who was a good friend of mine and a very competitive player for both Norton Cricket Club and the Buffs.
Glad to hear you are still kicking the ball about Nigel, you should have played a higher grade of football than you did.
I played for United Biscuits around 1984, with some of these guys had a great time. Am still playing football. Mick, Derrick and Tommy ran both teams.
Tommy Gilbert was another player who played for Stockton Juniors before moving on to the senior team.
Tommy Gilbert in this photo played outside right for Stockton F.C. in the 1961-62 season, he was a speedy direct winger with a eye for a goal, just like Ronnie Laverick on the other wing.
I would imagine so Dorothy, as he lived in the Major Street area and certainly went to Bailey Street school. He also mentioned he did his National Service about 56/57 so he must be about 72 now.
Would this Steve Strachan be the son of Mrs. Strachan who was a dinner nanny at Bailey Street in the 50’s, lovely lady?
What a weird coincidence – I wrote previously that I knew the Duckling brothers from this photo, and also mentioned that they had a sister Brenda, and yes, she did marry Norman Beale. Last night at Egglescliffe school carol concert I was introduced to Steve Strachan, who is the goalie in the photo. I had never met him before but he did say he used to play football for Bailey Street and Richard Hind, so I assume this is him. He is still living in Stockton.
The Duckling brothers had two sisters not one, I think Brenda married Norman Beale & the other married a lad called Paul Latham. Their father, Bill, also played in the Northern League for Billingham Synthonia, he can be seen in the teams on the Synthonia website in the archives squad section.
Unfortunately Bob Mcveigh, Bill Moss & Lou Illingworth are no longer with us but apart from Ray Clarke, the rest are still involved with the league. Three people not mentioned, who are still serving the league, are Alan Close, John & Jean Johnson.
Some of the men who have kept the Stockton Sunday League running from the start 1968 to the present are Bob McVeigh, Bill Moss, Ray Clarke, Lou Illingworth, Derek Overton, Ken Clarke, Harry Oliver & Jez Lambert.
Lol Gaston in this photo is the father of Richard Gaston, the Norton & Stockton Ancients captain.
Most of this team & a few friends went to Worcester to play the Midland All Star’s in aid of the year of the child. Frank Lucas organised it (through the Fiesta) with the Rocking Berries. They had Robert Plant, Jasper Carrot, members of “The Who” & The Berries took part in a game that ended 5-5. Also there was all the Tiz Waz team, & Chris Tarrant did the comentary on the game in which Trevor Francis made a cameo appearance two weeks before he played in the European Cup final for Nottingham Forest. Neadless to say Brian Clough didn’t know.
Yes Len, it is the same Terry Alan. At that time Terry was an apprentice at Harker’s and was a top pool player at that time. I haven’t seen him for years. To Ray Carter, Peter moved down south a number of years ago, I still get news of him through his uncle, Norman Bellerby. Ray Good on the end of the photo had the butcher’s shop in Norton Road next to Skilbeck’s paper shop which was next to Bill Gate’s sports shop.
Came across this photo and had a good laugh at my dad (Terry Allan). Guess I know where I got my untamed ginger hair from!
This is the team Gary Pallister (Middlebrough & Man Utd) played Sunday League football alongside Norman Bellerby who was a very good centre-half, this shows Norman’s dedication he must be nearly forty in this photo. My old team-mate from Norton C.C.T. Billy Duckling a great lad, there is a lot of good lads in this team I bet they had a good team spirit. Derek is the Terry Alan in the photo the lad that worked at Harkers Engineering?.
I worked with Peter Bonner at Redpath Engineering during the 80s, he always had a smile on his face. Haven’t seen him since then.
Eddie Duckling and Peter Bonner were regulars in the Mile House around this time, two great lads.
The Duckling brothers father, Bill Snr, was also
a good footballer playing in the Teesside League for Billingham Synthonia & Hartburn Amatuers in the fifties, along with his brother Ron.
Eddie Duckling in the photo was at Newcastle United as a youth player, but a bad knee injury curtailed his career. He later played for Norton C.C.T. (now Norton & Stockton Ancients). Eddie is the younger brother of Billy Duckling who was a well known player at Norton C.C.T.
Seeing the Duckling brothers, Billy and Eddie, reminded me of the time we used to knock about the Mile House Park and push little Eddie (I think his given name was Edwin?) in his pram. There was quite an age gap between them, Billy would have been 15 at the time and going to Richard Hind school. If this football team photo was taken in 1980, Billy would have been in his mid thirties then – there was also a sister, Brenda, who also went to Richard Hind.

This picture shows what a long career the goalkeeper Stevie Strachan had, he can be seen in the Teesside Builders Team 1955-56 season. Nice to see my old Norton C.C.T. team-mate, he was an ideal colleague when the going got rough never one to shirk, also a great mate off the field.
