I left Mill Lane in 1953 and these two teachers were the best in the school. I remember Pop
Wilke taking us swimming to the old pool at Bath Lane when there was an upstairs, then walking
back to school. One of the best.
I left Mill Lane School for Boys’ in July 1963 as Head Boy and those two teachers were always absolute gentlemen. They were a pleasure to have as teachers and both were instrumental in shaping my later life and the career path that I eventually took. They had a real interest in both students, and school, and it was a pleasure to have known them and to be taught by them. Bill Robertson took an interest in anyone who wanted to learn and devoted his whole teaching life to Mill Lane School as did my Head Teacher at the time and Mr Robertson’s predecessor, Luke White. Also worth a special mention is Mrs Amos, formerly Miss Woodhead, the best Maths teacher that I ever had. She got me on the road to liking ‘numbers’ which assisted me throughout my working life in mechanical engineering and project management. I wish they were all still with us to thank them personally.
I remember your mother and father serving me and would love to see a photo of the shop as it was then. Plus you being on the photo would remind me what you looked like. I think Pop reminds me of a young Bruce Forsythe in the early Palladium days. I was at Millane till 1966 and feared Mr Code the most.
Yes Robert, spot on. My father ran the corner shop in Nelson Terrace, still standing and has been a electrical equipment shop for a number of years. I have found a photo of the outside of the shop…..but….. I am standing in front and spoil it!! Don’t you think Pop looks rather ‘dapper’ and out of place in his smart jacket, white shirt and white hanky on a school visit to a farm!! with a load of mucky kids no doubt!
Thanks for sharing that photo David. I was in Pops class and to me now he looks young, but of course back then he looked old to me. Are you the David Moon who’s Father owned the shop on the corner of Bright Street? I lived in Milbank St and remember going to that shop many times. I would love to see any photos of the streets around there.
This photo was taken by me (presumably using a box brownie!) on a rare school outing to a farm. Sorry can’t pin down exact year it was taken, but guessing around 1961/62. I hope this brings back memories to ex pupils.
