On the back of the print is written “Mr Perkins made 40 machines since Aug 1790 and 36 of them are already sold, 19 April 1791”
This annotation is thought to have been written by William Wilson of Great Ayton who introduced several agricultural improvements, including a seed drill.
So it is possible that this was Wilson’s design although Christopher Perkins was granted the patent (No. 1773) in August 1790.
As this drill appears to have been of wooden construction, it is probable that the manufacturer was the same Christopher Perkins who appears in contemporary records as a cabinet maker.
