This picture was taken at Stockton market circa 1982 – a while ago someone was talking about the man with the scales so here is a pic of him, I don’t know his name– I am the one being weighed and that’s my son Daniel next to me – one of our trips home from Canada. I remember my mam and dad getting weighed by Jack in the 50s I loved to watch him working the scales out and moving the pointer and looking at mams face to see if she had a smile or not ,Also remember my aunt taking him her husbands old suits to wear thinking he was poor ,I am surprised to hear he was a well off man just goes to show you
I remember the weigh man standing in the high street ,my father and me used to pass him when we walked to the Yorkshire bank to put the days takings into the bank box outside the bank. My father was manager at Farm Stores and carried the money in a leather case and always wore his white coat which must have been an easy target for muggers.
That would have been in the 60/70s when we had never heard of muggings.
The weigh man used to live on Durham Road in the house on the roundabout near Lustrum Beck.

The weigh man was called Jack Roberts and operated his trade for fifty years, some feat.
I believe that shortly after he passed away it was found that he was a very wealthy man!!
