  1. It was indeed the Green Tree Anon and our watering hole after a half shift at Browns in Prince Regent Street, no one asked my age. It was full of characters one being Jimmy Legget who felt safe when he was with our rough mob, a well educated man who dressed in a flamboyant way in a time when people like that were persecuted, we rescued him a couple of times when others decided to take umbrage at the way he dressed, as I said a rough lot.
There would at times be a lock in when we domino players retired to the back room with the Landlord and the Landlady would bring out a large dish of some Italian bake, late in the night we would sneak out and go home, that included a couple of Policemen who were regulars.
Those Town pubs were hubs of activity most nights of the week, something for every man, darts domino’s cards, groups chatting and the beer flowing liberally, with the Dance Halls, Picture Houses and Hippodrome live stage Stockton was alive, families could visit the Cinema and get the bus home with no problems.
As we saw this summer Stockton can still draw the families in and give the youngsters fun and games although that is only once a year, a lot more needs to be done before the High Street becomes a place to visit again.
