Football: Ancients v Kingstonians – 1933

A match between Stockton Football Club ‘The Ancients and the Surrey based team the ‘Kingstonians’. We believe this photograph to have been taken in 1933, possibly during the FA Amateur Cup Final?

  1. All reports I’ve seen on the Final Replay say it was played at Darlington. However, does anybody know if we are talking about the home of Darlington F.C. at that time, Feethams?

  2. Kingstonian at this time had a army forward by the name of Frank Macey, a regular England international, he was the captain and remains the second highest goalscorer in the club’s history. Dulwich Hamlet won the F.A. Amatuer Cup in 1932 and 1934, but in 1933 Kingstonian knocked them out on their way to the final.

  3. The 1933 Amateur Cup Final was played at Dulwich Hamlets ground with a replay at Darlington which Stockton lost 4-1. The picture looks more like Dulwich’s ground.

  4. It is the F.A. Amatuer Cup Final in 1933 when Stockton drew with Kingstonian 1-1 at Dulwich Hamlet, then they were beaten in the replay at Darlington 4-1 after leading 1-0. They then went down to ten men after their full back broke his ankle.

    • The Stockton side which played in both games was Newton, Thompson, Little, Foster, Pass, Edwards, Stephenson, ‘Bullet’ Smith, Coulthard, Prest and Anderson. Jack Coulthard was the top scorer with fifty-seven goals and Joe Thompson was the player who got a broken ankle, after the game ‘Bullet’ Smith who was a England Amateur International, his after match conduct led to him getting a twelve months ban.
