People gather around Stockton War Memorial possibly during Armistice Day, late 1920s? Also seen in the photograph is the Royal Oak and Victoria Buildings.
The war memorial in Stockton was unveiled in 1923, and is showing signs of dirt and grime in this photo, so it might be from the 1930s. Many of the men are wearing their military medals confirming that this photo was taken around 11 November – but which year?
I never met my grandad Robert Casey, he died 1939, he had joined the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in 1912, fought in France 4 weeks after the BEF landed in 1914, then sent to Gallipoli to join the 1st battalion, when the campiagn ended he was sent back into France for the Somme offensive, he fell very badly wounded 1st July 1916, he was then disharged from KOSB 1918. Perhaps he was standing at the war memorial that day who knows, he was one of those men who would be called “Old Contemptables” no photo of my grandad survived as far as I know so sad not to see his face.
