Walker’s Tannery – 1975

Walker’s Tannery, situated in an exposed position on the River Tees, to the west of the rialway viaduct. The buildings occupied a key position on the riverside opposite the Yarm Conservation area. Walker’s Tannery became into existence, June 1st 1955. This photograph was taken December 1975.

  1. Who recalls the ‘Yarm stink’? A fairly unpleasant aroma frequently emitted from the tannery, which tended to hang over the town, particularly on warm days. Local housewives had to quickly bring their line-hung washing indoors, before it pervaded the bedsheets, or other items of clothing.
