This collection of photographs date from 1895 and show scenes from many meetings of Stockton Cycling Club around the area. Some of these meetings were attended by a considerable amount of people.

A Pictorial History of Stockton-on-Tees
I didn’t realise how long ago it was that I posted these images, I recently sent some more (I have 32 of these glass slides) but they have not appeared on the website, I don’t know why.
The top photo shows the front entrance of the Londonderry Arms with part of the licencee’s name. Paul Dunnill has identified the name as William Browell. He was landlord of the pub in the 1890s.
The latter picture seems reminiscent of a N.Yorks village location. Ingleby Greenhow?, Kirby in Cleveland? Though that seems a longway from Stockton to propel a penny-farthing bicycle!

When you think about it, one turn of the large penny farthing wheel will get you a long way down the road! so long as you can stay on it! 🙂
