Work on Church Row – 1934

Another photograph of the road building programme in the Church Road area, 1934. To the left on the corner is the old Marks and Spencer shop. Straight ahead is Robinsons Tower, now known as Debenhams.

  1. I lived in Bay Street , behind Church Road, that was in the fifties. I’ve never been able to find a pic of the street. I remember some of the neighbours names, Mr and Mrs Jordison and family they lived in Beech Street. I remember going into a friends home in Beech Street he was the first to get a television all the kids went in at teatime, his name elludes me at the moment though. The Dolans, the Browns, the Halls, the Stainsbys. Mrs Pallister they all lived in Bay Street… Does anyone else remember any other names of my neighbours?.. Has anyone got any pics of the surrounding streets? Peter Jordison sent in a great one of Beech Street. Thanking you in anticipation!

  2. Many thanks for finding these in the Planning Department archives. They don’t have anything of the east end of Church Road, and old Portrack by any chance?? These new pics make the site well worth keeping up with.

  3. I remember the old police station near the baths. I remember strange constructions outside the doors that looking back could have been protection against bomb blast in the war, but they were still there in the 1960s.
