Stockton Corporation Bus

This is a postcard showing a Stockton Corporation bus in front of the National Provincial Bank at the south end of Stockton High Street. The destination board reads Old Thornaby/Stockton Town Hall.

  1. I used to live on Thornaby Road with my parents and remember the no 8 (later 58, I think) ran every 15 or 20 minutes. Now I think there is one bus per day (if that) on that route – good old Arriva, serving the needs of its passengers!

  2. Correct Julie Povey, that this is on the W side of the High Street towards Dovecot Street but opposite the Doric Column/Market Cross as some called it and near the Town Hall. I used to find Althams to be an interesting shop. Quite a range of goods, including household goods I seem to recall.

  3. I remember these old Leylands well having caught one hundreds of times as a kid on the No. 8 service from the top of Romford Road, Roseworth to Thornaby via Ragworth shops, Dover Road, Durham Road to the town and on to Thornaby during the 1950s. I think the numbers of this particular model ran from around 46 to 70 and they dated from C1949 being phased out in the 1960s. There used to be a plate inside, I seem to remember, with the name Massey- Harris, Pemberton, Wigan -the name of the coachbuilders.
