Chris, you remember correctly, there were two entrances to Hardy’s. We got a three piece in the early 1980s from them, unfortunately it wasn’t up to much, it looked better than it really was and didn’t last long…
The rhythms of the windows and rooflines in this fairly short stretch are quite incredible. It is difficult to say which building was the original structure on ‘the block’. The grandiose elegance of The Talbot Hotel , with it’s brown granite pillars and stone surrounds/heads to the windows, seems to indicate that it is later than than all the other buildings. However the fluted frieze above the Hardy’s sign seems like an ‘add on’ to an older facade. Didn’t the Hardy’s shop link up with another entrance on Church Rd, i.e next door to the Cattle Market pub?
We bought our first bed and bedroom suite from Hardys in 1969 on the never never.

We bought our first 3 piece suite from Hardy’s £55, in the early 60’s…. Just out of view would be Pete’s snack bar.
