The last time I went there was in 1959? to see ‘The Platters’ singing group who were touring Britain following their success in the very first Rock and Roll film ‘Rock Around The Clock’, in which they had sung “Only You” (‘and only you alone’) and “The Great Pretender”. The Platters were famous for updating older standards, such as “My Prayer”, “Twilight Time”, ” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, but had very little success until they starred in the blockbuster film ‘Rock Around the Clock’ which had been shown a year or so earlier further down the High Street at ‘‘The Cinema’’ cinema.
Rock Around The Clock starring ‘Bill Haley and His Comets’ ushered in Stockton’s Teddy Boy craze and Teddy Boy suits fashion which was followed later by ‘Winkle Picker Shoes’, and the wearing of ‘Mod Suits’ bought from Jacksons or Burton the tailors. ‘I was a mod.’ It could well be that the Beatles from Liverpool copied the Stockton-on-Tees ‘Mod Boys’ image by adopting the wearing of mod clothes worn by us in early 1960s, when they appeared on stage in their early touring days. Does anyone have photos of them in Stockton High Street wearing a ‘Teddy Boy suit’?
