We believe this photograph to be c1900 and shows the flooding of Yarm High Street. A group of people watch as a man uses a rowing boat as a punt to cross the road. Terraced housing can be seen on either side of the High Street.
Thankfully in the ever changing aspect to most town’s main thoroughfares, this section of Yarm High Steet remains almost as shown, over 100 years later. Five houses up on the right, the shopfront of what became Frederick Rigg’s (more recently David Rigg) butchers shop in 1906, can just be seen. This business only closed earlier this year (2012) upon David’s retirement and his family still lives in the large townhouse premises. On the left, the facade with the bow-top windows and pale coloured render is now Stephen Russell’s hairdressers. A restaurant occupies the third building on the left, with Cartmells Electrical shop (Est 1946) in the fourth. Apart from those mentioned, most of the terraced housing shown still remain as private residences.
