  1. The top photo shows 3 Smith Street as the first complete house on the left of the photo with its dark blue sign, up to white painted 7 Smith Street on the right. 3 Smith Street was occupied by Thomas Melia and family and son-in-law Levi Groskop and family in the 1901 census. Levi managed to play football for Thornaby and later Stockton. This surviving terraced block ran from 3 to 10 Smith Street, M. Richards joiners held units 7-10 Smith Street, Norman Woodhall held land (over old 11-14 Smith Street ) and a car dealership at address 11 Smith Street, and then there was the North Eastern pub on the High Street. 1 and 2 Smith Street (once the Slater Arms beerhouse) had been demolished under the John Street road widening scheme just before the war.

  2. Norwood Cars were named after the owner Norman Woodall. The garage operated from those premises from about 1980-2002, before the site was redeveloped.
