Schoolchildren, Norton Green c1900

t149In the photograph we can see West Row, the houses date from late 1700, the trees possibly planted c1890 still have their animal protection surrounds. Behind the tree line is the ‘White House’ a line of cottages of the Anstey Trust. Children assemble around the village pump which sported a Unicorn’s head and was erected in the 1870s. Three of the girls appear to be wearing the uniform of the National School, while the boys are dressed in knickerbockers, flat caps and Eton collars.

  1. Yes, Mr. Mee, my Dad had the other photo in a frame in his hallway at Curlew Lane. I know the pond/cow photo you mention too. It’s on PS here somewhere I think.

  2. Correct me if I am wrong, I have seen this same photograph from several angles and am sure it is the same kids pram and dress. Did the photographer whilst having a captive set of models take several differing shots? The trees according to another photo I have seen were planted in 1885, before that the green was just a meadow and the pond was seen with cows standing in it.
