The Junction of Dovecot Street and Stockton High Street

A very early view of Dovecot Street and the High Street junction in Stockton. Could that be the facade of Althams on the left? Date unknown.

Photograph and details Derek Buttle.

  1. I have good memories of Dovecot Street because my father was the manager of the Farm Stores Butchers near West Row. We used to walk over to the Yorkshire bank to deposit the takings. Always seemed busy and friendly walking through the stallls. I think some shops would look nice if they had colourful canopies over their windows. People could look in the windows without the glare or the rain coming down…

  2. I used to shop at Althams a lot for my Nanna. She insisted a tin of salmon from there was better than from Woolworths.

  3. I’ve just seen an old postcard on Ebay, that shows an early view up Dovecote Street, The photograph, taken from just about where the gentlemen are seated on the stall-frames in the foreground, captures from the corner (Cowley’s Jewellers) past the Lit & Phil Inst,, toward the Spread Eagle Hotel and onward. Is this photograph available on this site?

  4. One realises that if Stockton High Street had been preserved, because of the width of the street and the majesty of its buildings, it could have been the greatest provincial high street in the country!

  5. The Victoria Buildings in the background look very fresh, with their stone not very blackened by Stockton’s smokey atmosphere. As they were built in 1899, I would date this image to 1905-1910.
