A view of Maxwells Corner and the Globe at the north end of Stockton High Street. The film showing at the Globe is ‘Who’s Minding the Store?’ starring Jerry Lewis and Jill St John c1963.
I would guess everything in the area between the two gas holders on the right and the smaller one towards the middle would be to do with the Gas Works.
The Globe was the up-market cinema in Stockton and was able to splash out with publicity. I remember that when ” The Day the Earth Stood Still” was shown, in 1951, they had an 8ft tall replica of the robot in the foyer. It was awesome (a word we didn’t use at the time) being massively built, all white figure, with just a black slit, for eyes, underneath the helmet.
I think that they also showed the 3D films, or was that done in the Odeon?
Does anybody remember Sams next door to Maxwells? I bought my mother a lawn mower when I first started work in 1954 on terms of course, it lasted for many years until electric took over.
The film “Who’s Minding the Store” came out in 1963, which ties in with the type of car and relative absence of traffic jams.
A very nice and clear picture, but what are the three buildings to the left of the gasometer in the background.

Great memories of going to the Minors on a Saturday morning at the Globe and always buying a Mivi or Choc ice.
This is the Stockton I remember, this wonderful picture brings back very happy memories.
