Floodlights help aid Firemen as they battle the blaze which destroyed the Queens Hotel at 72 Bishopton Lane, 30th January 1981. Up until 1944 this section of Bishopton Lane was known as Station Terrace.

  1. Held our wedding reception there on 20th September, 1969. 50 years ago today. Remember we had a three course meal. If anyone has any photos of the place around that time it would be appreciated. Thanks.

  2. My band were to play in the ballroom the the evening after the fire took place. I remember travelling to work from Norton and seeing the smoke from Norton Road and wondering what it was. Usually we would have taken all our gear the day before and for some reason hadn’t on this occasion, otherwise it would have all been incinerated!

  3. Very sad to see this photo. My parents (George and Theresa) were managers of the hotel, and it was my ‘home’, between 1947 – 1959.

  4. Blimey! Over thirty years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. Got up to go to work, opened the front door in Vicarage street, the street was full of hoses, about 3 or 4 large diameter ones. Walked out to Bishopton Road, even more hoses also I think even more from Vicarage Avenue and Durham Road.

    • My Grandparents lived almost next door at 76 Bishopton Lane. I left Stockton in 1956 and didn’t know about the fire until about 10 years ago when I returned to the old town on a nostalgia trip. Was sad to see The Queens was not there.

      • I have to admit I can’t remember it… I assume the site later became where the Registery Office now is? I used to walk down Bishopton Lane with my nana as a child but the Queens must have been near the station. I DO know there wasn’t a register office in the late 70’s (in Stockton) (at least on that site anyway)…

      • Who were your grandparents? I lived in 76 Bishopton Lane, 1980 till 1984, we were evacuated in the night of the fire to the Alma Centre behind.

      • Hi I am currently building a model of the hotel and would like to add the couple of houses next door. Do you have any photos of the house frontages Thanks Alan Davis
