It is Westbury Street, my brother John Wilson lived in the house on the left number 63, which is boarded up and apparently awaiting demolition. I’d date this photo after 1993. Westbury Street had a gentle, almost unoticeable, road slope for 200 yards commencing from the Sadler’s public house corner westward up Queen Street junction, from Queen Street it climbed a further 250 yards up a moderate steep bank to Gilmour Street corner, then from Gilbert Street the road leveled out to Lanehouse Road. Thornaby. I mention this because someone said it was Thornaby Road.
Minor landmarks passed are: The Sadlers pub, The Windmill pub opposite – whose entrancedoor was in Westbury Street, the Central Cinema, The Salvation Army Citadel, the Westbury Street fish shop (the best in Thornaby-though many preferred Dessie’s) Westbury Street School, Headmistress Miss Goodhall, The Catholic Church, and further on the Catholic School. The revamped Five Lamps was erected near the Central Cinema site.
I think it was in the mid to late 80.s as I married in 79 and my friend a few yrs later. She lived along Westbury St, a few doors from the shop and we both had kids in the 80’s.
Hi Keith, neither of my two brothers John and Tom, went to Robert Atkinson school, Tom went to Arthur Heads, I went to Robert Atkinson in 1953-4, two years later the switchover occurred, and I ended up in AH. Tom did go to night school, maybe you met him there?

In response to this picture been 1993, I am sure it was around 1975 pre A66 it definately wasn’t 1993.

Judging by the slope on the road these look more like the house on Thornaby Road next to the
Royal George pub.
