This was actually the route that Durham Lane used to follow when I used it in the 1970’s while going back and forward to work at Commodore on Eaglescliffe Ind Est. Only one vehicle at a time could cross it and it could take quite a while at peak times. If you travel along Durham Lane from the A66, look on the left, you can still see where the road used to go.
