I took these three photographs of the Billingham Folklore Festival in 1967. The first one shows the all the groups parading through the town centre. The second is a group posing for photos and the third shows what my wife
recollects as a Cuban group playing on the main stage outside the Council offices. In the distance is ICI, smoking furiously away, you can also see Kennedy Gardens flats and the rear of Malvern Road.

Yes, it is still going. This year’s festival opened today (August 10th) in fact.

My wife (then fiance) went to all of the early festivals including the first one, at the first one we saw two acts, they were The St. Leonards Irish Dance Troupe, who hailed from Sunderland and more interestingly we also saw Maddy Prior who went on to become the singer with Steeleye Span (All Around My Hat).
