Advanced steam turbine, ICI Billingham c1930

t13063These two images show the steam pipework and the steam turbine rotor for the high pressure section of an 85000 kW generating set on the Billingham works. The inlet temperature was 433°C and pressure 630 psi (43.5 bar) which was very advanced for the time. This part of the steam turbine produced 12500 kW from something about as big as a motor car. Turbine speed was 2400 rpm giving an electrical frequency of 40 cycles per sec, as was common throughout the North East at that t13064time.
