Is the High Street being dug up due to the reconstruction of the tramway? The piano dealers, SS Eades occupied the building from 1894 – 1935. The distinctive ‘peaks’ of the Lambton Castle pub can be seen further down. These buildings still stand there today.
The large full height plate-glass, shopfront of Eades is a truly remarkable installation for the date of this photograph, and I believe there’s another photograph on Picture Stockton, that shows the premises later having acquired a glazed roof! The original opening and surround for this ‘acreage’ of glass still exists. Later however, the huge windows became a little less stark with the addition of decorative glazing details and a mid-point cross bar, though the facade has by now, been infilled with a series of more conventional, modern ‘white’ UPVC windows.
So this must be Norton Road.
