  1. Went to school with this cleaner, we both attended Roseworth Sec 1963 to 1967. Brian Hoffman the name, and he has worked for Stockton Council for many years. Seem to recall his hobby was collecting beer mats.

    • Brian lived in Raglan Close, Roseworth and did indeed collect beer mats. He used to keep them in his shed and had a very large collection.

  2. Yes Cliff, Prince Regent Street went south from Dovecot Street and was at that time a blank end with no exit to Yarm Lane.
North from Dovecot Street was Nelson Terrace, Albert Road and John Street to Bishopton Lane, it now continues as Allison Street although at the time of the picture you would have seen the Electricity Office and Lengs boot factory straight across the road, you would dog leg to Allison Street. I think those names still apply although many call the new road wrongly Prince Regent Street.

    • Straight across the road from John Street was a butchers shop & Evans the builder, then Lengs boot factory and the Electricity Showroom was near Marks skin yard near the bend to the High Street, Allison Street was opposite the Leeds Hotel, the shop next the butchers on the corner of Allison Street was a café and later became a Chinese restaurant.

  3. In the distance the former Stokton Registry Office. The two elegant tables in the chamber where marriage ceremonies took place, were auctioned off with other furniture at it’s closure, ending up as 8-seater dining tables within the restaurant of the Kirklevington Country Club around 1982.

For a brief period after closure, the 1st floor of the building was occupied by a garden-themed restaurant, though I cannot recall it’s name.

    • We used to go to that restaurant, but can’t remember the name. The grub was good though, mainly Italian if I remember.

      • Several restaurants occupied that top floor. The first was a classy joint called “The Terrace”; Serinos followed, also good, and when I left Stockton in 1986 it was an Indian. Then the building disappeared, which, as anyone can see from the photograph, is a bit surprising.

  4. I think that the caption needs changing for this photo. The cleaner is outside the Classic Cinema (i.e the old Hippodrome) in Nelson Terrace.
