Interior views of the foyer and main auditorium at the Globe Theatre, Stockton c1970s?
We hear so much about the big name acts that appeared on the globe, but I saw another side to the building. I worked for Charles Tenant and we had a number of maintenance contracts for the building when the acts appeared my men used the back stage dressing rooms for there breaks , it was surprising the number of fan letters left about to the amusement of our men . We had to be out before the acts came in, but often it was a need for us to work all night , so the public moved out leaving the vast building to us .
How many people know that the drainage is some 12 feet below stocktons main drainage ,there are or were two huge pumps used to lift the the sewerage up to connect the two. There is another world above the ceiling that the public see. We also had to put in the first bar , some two weeks before the Christmas panto , the company got planning permission 4 PM on the Friday night , we started work at 6 having to call men out to knock down walls get timber etc an the whole work had to be complete for opening night . Omg! It changed to a cinema…Saturday morning matinees, then a bingo hall …such a shame and would be great to see live performances again here!
I saw the original Rolling Stones at the Globe they were on with Ike and Tina Turner, it cost me 5 bob.
