Despite all the criticism of the new layout of the High street and at least the design – and the car free zone we have had for quite a number of years is a vast improvement on the race-track that existed prior to that.
The old High street was wonderful in the days when cars were not commonplace but towards the late eighties I remember my son used to go along to watch the ‘boy racers’ in their Ford Escorts which zoomed along one side of the High street, round and back up the other – continuing their laps until eventually being stopped by police.
I’m pleased to say that when my son got his first car (a Ford Escort) he didn’t decide to join in.
