    • This was Duncan Radburn’s small general store, sweet shop and news agency. Perhaps you are confusing the building with the Swan Hotel on Wolviston Road in Billngham, a mile to the South, which is also 1920’s mock Tudor style. As kids, many of us on the North side of Billingham were Wolf Cubs and later, Scouts, in the 1st. Woviston pack and troop. The Scoutmaster was Cyril Angus, and Cub leader (Akela), his sister, Thelma. After the meetings ended, there would be a rush of small, noisy boys, to the shop, which had a Beech-Nut chewing gum machine outside. Inserting a penny (old coinage) in the slot, you would turn the handle a quarter-turn, to deliver a small package of gum. The catch was, however, that every fourth penny would deliver not one but two packages, so there was much jostling and pushing, to be the next one in the queue, when the arrow on the handle was pointing forward.
