In the distance, just to the left of the Town-hall tower, can also be seen the tall brick chimney of Wren’s Vinegar factory, on the Co. Durham side of the ancient stone bridge over the River Tees. Prior to becoming a factory that also produced vinegar-based foodstuffs ( sauces, chutney’s, etc) this was once the site of a large paper-mill dating from the early 19thC.
