Is this Wynyard Hall?

t13347Does anyone have any idea where and when this photograph was taken?  The building looks like Wynyard Hall…

The man presenting awards is definitely Prince George before he was crowned King George VI. The youths were probably members of a Boys Brigade or Church Lads Brigade. Who are the two men standing on the right?  If it is Wynyard Hall, in my mind’s eye, the distance today from the far Corinthian column to the end of the building, is greater than the distance between the same two points in the photograph. If it is Wynyard Hall, has that end of the building been extended since the photograph was taken? My guess is between 1925 and 1935. Is the large house beyond the trees still there?

  1. The taller man on the right is the 7th Marquis of Londonderry. He succeeded to the title in 1915 and died in 1949. Prince George became king in 1936.
We have no knowledge of a girls’ school but there was a female teacher training college from 1946 to 1961. There was no extension at the left hand end.

  2. Wynyard Hall was used for teacher training in the 1950s. My mother attended the college as a mature student.

  3. Due to the pattern on the hats these are members of the Church Lads’ Brigade. I would put the date around about 1910. In 1911, the CLB applied for recognition as Cadets and most companies were keen to go into Khaki Service Dress. Cadet affiliation stopped in the 1930s but at this time most CLB companies wore a full blue serge uniform.

  4. It looks like Wynyard Hall I worked there decorating for about 9 months when Lady Londonderry was just married. The building to the left at the time was a private girls school with accommodation. Beyond that was a courtyard with a lot of stables and a clock tower further to the left was a boathouse. The entire area was demolished, I thought it was a dreadful thing to do !
Quite a few photos were taken at the time by the builder who lived at Wolviston. Lady Londondery thought it was a shame also.

  5. Yes it is Wynyard hall and yes it was extended. My company was involved in a study to renovate the hall for the marques of Londonderry. Back in the 70s.

    • Peter, Thanks for replying. Do you know if the house beyond the trees was demolished to make room for the extension? I have seen another photograph of the hall with cattle in fenced enclosures on both sides of and in front of the building. Today there is a wide expanse of gravel where those cattle grazed. That photograph also shows the house beyond the trees.
