  1. Sadly recently heard that the lovely lady called Nancy Pacitto who used to serve me on a regular basis on a Sunday with tubs of ice-cream, has died earlier this year not long after her husband.

    • This sad but lovely post only serves to remind me of the passion and love I had toward ice cream, originally born from a Paleschi’s ice cream made on the premises shop on Tilery Road, usually getting scoops in a bowl for our Sunday tea.
The passion continued as I spread my wings in calling at alternate ice cream outlets in Stockton, Rossi’s, Rhea’s, Pacitto’s and again Paleschi’s.
All of them with their own unique flavour, all absolutely first class, beautiful, I reckon at the time I could tell on a blind taste test who’s was who’s.
So many happy times in and around Stockton.
      JW.

    • Happy memories of Pacitto’s coffee bar opposite the Empire Theatre in the late 50’s early 60’s – Haydn

  2. I was in town on Saturday and noticed that Pacittos was closed and on looking through the window I saw that all the tables and chairs had been removed and the serving area had been cleared too .
There was no notice in the window but I just wonder with all the other coffee shops opening up in the High Street if this is the end of an era for another Stockton landmark ?

    • So sad that this shop has closed. My mam worked there in the 70s and 80s. I am glad I visited again last year when I was in Stockton (from Surrey where I live now). Ice cream as gorgeous as ever and lots of happy memories

    • All the signage has been removed from the shop front now and although the windows have been ‘whitewashed’ you can see that the whole shop has now been cleared out and is empty . The end of an era , Stockton institution and landmark .

  3. How I wish there were photos of the opposite end of West Row showing my Nana’s newsagents shop, I have spent hours looking through this great site looking for one!

    • Your nana was one of my favourite people when I was a child. I lived in Prince Regent Street in the early 50’s so Mrs Barnes was the nearest sweet shop. I would go into the shop and ask for a mars bar and that mam would pay her later (which she did). I used to go to Sunday tea with your nan and the old lady next door.
