A fascinating looking building, that greatly contrasts with the more rudimentary brickwork buildings to either side. In the days before central heating this amount of glazing would certainly make the building feel like an ice-box in winter. That’s probably why it appears to have fireplaces to each corner, judging by the ‘stubby’ chimneys seen at roof level.
Burton House ceased being the offices of the Tees Navigation Company at some point prior to 1879.It later became a beer house, with William Sturdy being the licensee 1879-1902. Does anyone have any information on exactly when the Tees Navigation Company moved offices?
