  1. I remember the “skin-yard” well. On our way to do a bit of fishing we used to swing by the yard to pick maggots off the hides for bait. Once smelled, never forgotten! In those days Yarm was about as far downstream as you could get on the Tees with any hope of catching anything remotely alive. But look at it today – what a comeback thanks to the Barrage.

  2. I believe the company that ran the tannery was W D Marks. There was a terrible smell in Yarm when the wind was blowing from the works.
