In years gone by, many newsagents sold tickets to a selection of bus trips with Beeline tours. This was a trip to Gretna Green, and I remember picking up passengers from Norton, Stockton, and Middlesbrough. We were asked to be the Bride and Groom in a mock wedding over the anvil, a great coincidence as we eloped to Gretna a year earlier, in 1967!

A highlight of the summer holidays used to be the beeline trips when we were kids. I remember places like flamingo land, and Bridlington being staples but also the “mystery” tours where you could work out the destination by looking at the cost and checking against the named one’s – and we were never surprised when we got to the destination. They whole concept was brilliant, would save on traffic on roads, parking problems and promote community if they were brought back.
