Dr Who, Queen Street School, Thornaby

t13742A group of children performing a Dr Who sketch, does anyone recognise them?

My father Brian Moores was Headmaster at Queen Street School from 1961 until 1966, he was a keen photographer and took many shots of his time at the school but unfortunately these are not dated.

  1. Hello! I’m currently researching different versions of the Dr Who character, so am curious about the details of this play – is anyone able to tell me whether it was full length, or just a sketch as part of a revue? I’d also love to know why a girl was chosen to play the Doctor, but any details about the production would be very welcome!

Please feel free to contact me via my Facebook page.

    Thank you!

  2. I remember being in that Dr Who play – I must have been a Dalek but can’t remember. However the music was TELSTAR by the TORNADO’S, we didn’t seem to have a Dr Who record. For Carol Parker, I also went to Middlesbrough High School for boys the same year after the 11 plus. Was there a Mrs Peverell ? that name seems to stick in my mind.

  3. I was in the same class Mrs Degan”s and good friends with John G and Paul L.
I also recognise Paula Collentine as Susan and Carol Hewitson as Dr Who. We must have been 9 or 10yrs old so maybe 1964/5.

      • Gosh Tarmac? A lifetime ago. I was trying to remember where I knew you from yes it was Tarmac Roadstone Bowesfield Lane think I worked for Ron Gray and Terry ??? not long after I left there I joined British Telecom and was there for 33 yrs before retiring from there.

  4. This could be Mollie Degan’s production of 1966 but maybe some of the children in it will remember more. Mrs Degan was a remarkable teacher who managed to get 22 of us through the 11 plus in 1966. She was also unconventional. I once saw an empty box of cigarettes in her bin with a heart and arrow in biro drawn on it. On one side of the heart she had written Mollie on the other ELVIS! Occasionally her husband used to drop her off in a vintage Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, he wore a bowler hat. I think he worked at Paton and Baldwin, they lived at High Conniscliffe in the Old Mill.

Dr Who could be Paul Longstaff…

    • Yes it was Mrs Degan who did all the hard work. I played Dr Who and it was Christmas 1965. I got through the 11+ in 1966 and went to Middlesbrough High School for Girls. She was a good teacher although she did always smell of cigarettes. I remember her son sometimes came into school. I think Paul Longstaff was a dalek. Helen Cartwright also and I think Lesley Huckle. John Greenley played Stephen and Joyce Leeson played Susan??

  5. With the Daleks present on set, this must be 1964 or later, the cyborgs having made their extremely scary entry into our lives in Dr Who in December 1963. I remember it well!
