This photograph was taken just before WW1 and shows the Stockton Wheelers Cycling Club and their outing to the annual North Eastern Cycling Meet in Barnard Castle.
They are standing outside Vasey’s Temperance Hotel. The people in the photo are all from Portrack. I can identify only two people – my Grandad Herbert Castelow (sitting down on the left with his hands across his knees) and my Great Grandad John Castelow (standing in the centre with the stripy jacket). If any one can identify the remaining people that would be great.

Hi Christine
Your mam & dad came into Barnard Castle Library today, 30/08/2016. I have had a few minutes to look at the photo of ‘Vaseys temperance Hotel & believe it is in Richmond North Yorks & NOT Barnard Castle! Try website- http://www.earle.me.uk/s/cc_images/teaserbox_2458943925.jpg?t=1461577437. Hope this helps
Hi Sue. After all this time I have just seen your comment. It is definitely the hotel where my dad and Grandad stayed Richmond not Barnard Castle at all. Thank you so much for sending it on to me. The day we came in we were so disappointed we couldn’t find the place where all the family had stayed. Thank you once again.
Remember Castelow’s lived at bottom of Nicholson Street – they had an allotment opposite just before entrance to Blacketts.
Hi Christine, can’t identify anyone, but I used to go to Yarm County School with Gloria Castelow they lived round the corner from us at Yarm any relation? Not seen since school days, they might have moved to Whitby but not sure, regards Graham.
