There is an article in the September 2015 issue of “Back Track” a railway magazine, on accidents which happened on the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
Many of the accidents seem to have happened because the drivers having had “one too many”.. But basic causes were that most of the traffic on the line was horse drawn chaldrons (coal trucks) and most of the line was just a single track. The tracks were treated just like an ordinary toll road, so anyone could use them, and the Stockton and Darlington company had little control over the drivers.

Felt it right to get a plug in here for the “Heritage Stockton” site, as it has some posts on a similar theme.
