  1. My father-in-law often told the story of his first job working for Hill Carter. It was 1927 and he delivered ladies hats for them. Aside from the pay which I can not recollect, he was given one farthing for a delivery to Norton, using the electric tram. He had an eye for taking care of the pennies etc, so he ran all the way and would pocket the farthing!

  2. The Cash Clothing Company with it’s impressive lettering on the front (“Cash Clothing Company – The Peoples Clothiers”) is easy to spot, but can’t say I’d noticed before that the Silver Street side of the shop also had it’s own slogan. It’s a bit obscured by the tram but looks to be along the lines of “Best Value in the World”? Quite a claim!
Those signs probably wouldn’t be allowed these days.
