  1. Hi, my wife went to both Newtown and Newham Grange school, we don’t have a single photo of her from those days, could I ask if any one remembers her and has a group photo could you please ask picturestockton for my email. My wife before we married was Rita Taylor, Rita was an Eastbourne lass. My wife told me she sang in school choir at Durham Cathedral? would any one know if photo’s were taken, all so long ago I know but hope springs eternal.

    All the best.

    Derek.

  2. I went to Newtown from 1969 to June 1972, Mr Hicks was the headmaster and Mr Stevens was my first teacher. I went on to classes with the now late Mrs Roberts and Mrs Penny, Mr Bush taught maths and we took exams in the big hall. Boys went in the left door at the front of the building, girls in the right side door and woe betide anyone who didn’t use the correct door. The pool was freezing cold every time we swam in it, we were taught to swim before being allowed to use the town pool to earn our red ribbon that proved you could swim the 25 yards from deep end to shallow end. A great school that taught self reliance but failed in academic standards, only two of us passed the 11+ the year I left, I hope it has retained its identity and improved for young people.

  3. This Country Dance thing has been going on a long long time. I was in the team around 1950. Not a misprint, 1950. The teachers at that time were Mr O’Connor, Mr Diamond, the Misses Welch who were twins. The headmaster was Mr Smith. Bet nobody remembers them. It was such a long time ago. I have been living in Australia for 50 years.

  4. To Clint Ward,
Mrs Chesser is still around, I saw her about a week ago in Stockton High Street. My Mum, (Mrs Joan Hall) was a teacher at this school and Mrs Chesser was my Mum’s friend.

  5. I live in Middleton St George now, been married nearly 8 years and got a 3 year old daughter. My parents still live on Studley Road.

  6. I went to Newton Juniors and left there in 176-77. I remember Mrs Chesser, she was my favourite teacher. Fond memories. Can anyone please tell me what happened to her. Would mean a lot to me.

    • Hi Clint, I also went to Newtown juniors and I think we were in Mrs Chesser’s class at the same time. She was a very good teacher but, do also remember Mr Hodgeson, Mr Jones, Mr Manning all excellent teachers and a brilliant school. Happy days and good memories, every time I drive past it now it looks and seems so small!

      • Hi Andrew. Yes I remember you, you lived round the corner from me. My parents still live on Studley Rd. Where are you at now?

        • Hi Clint, I still live in Stockton but not on Durham Road anymore I now live in Hartburn. Where do you now live now? are you still local? and how have the last 34 years been treating you? well I hope.
